This book explains the ever growing need to change our teaching approach of the next generation of mental health professionals, so that our students learn to think beyond the given, to draw on the benefits of different approaches and, in so doing, creatively weave together an approach best fitted for the individual patient. Case examples are used to demonstrate the utility of such flexibility of thought and practice. The authors are to be commended for reminding us all, that no two people are the same. Two patients with the same diagnosis may not respond equally well to the same intervention. Tailoring the treatment to the need of the individual, rather than trying to force a specific treatment intervention and style on all people, proves to be much more effective as it strives to do what we ask of all our psychology students-to empathically join with the individual you are treating, so as to ensure a better understanding of their specific needs and defenses and ultimately allow therapist and client achieve the best possible outcome.
