Adolf Francis Alphonse Bandelier (1840-1914) was a pioneering American anthropologist, archaeologist and explorer after whom the Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico is named. Born in Switzerland he emigrated to the United States where he devoted himself to archaeological and ethnological work among the Indians of the South- Western United States, Mexico and South America.
