This book offers an analysis of the decolonisation process across three different regions around the world: Central America, Southeast Asia and the Caucasus. It explores how the nature of previous imperial systems shaped the nation states that were created in their stead. Nicholas Tarling is a Fellow of the New Zealand Asia Institute at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has published a large number of books, mostly on Southeast Asia, and is editor of The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia. His most recent book is The British and the Vietnam War: their way with LBJ (2017).
